Chronicles of Shanghai · Sub-chronicles of Science · Humanities and Social Science Volume (1978-2010) published

After seven years of work, the 1.7 million-word long Chronicles of Shanghai·Sub-chronicles of Science·Humanities and Social Science Volume (1978-2010) (hereinafter referred to as Social Science Chronicles) was officially published in 2022.

Social Sciences Chronicles provides a comprehensive and objective account of the development of humanities and social sciences in Shanghai from the beginning of the Reform and Opening Up movement in 1978 to the first decade of the 21st century. It is a documentary, theoretical and scientific chronicle with distinctive characteristics of our times, of the city Shanghai and of social sciences.

In 2010, Shanghai officially launched the second round of compilation of new chronicles of the city. Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations was assigned to organize the compilation of Social Science Chronicles. In November 2014, the Federation established a compilation office, marking a milestone on this long journey. Now finished, the volume of Social Science Chronicles comprises three parts. The first part includes color photos, prefaces, an overview and a list of major events, serving as an introduction; the second part gives accounts of institutional associations, planning and management work, research, activities, award-winning achievements and people important for the development of humanities and social science in Shanghai, which make up the main body of the book. The academic research section is especially important. It comprehensively and systematically records the course and achievements of the development of humanities and social science in Shanghai from 1978 to 2010. The third part, The Appendices, lists the projects financially supported by the social science academic media based in Shanghai, projects entrusted to Shanghai scholars by the National Philosophy and Social Science Fund, and those sponsored by Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Planning Project.

In general, this round of compilation has conformed to the rules and styles set by the previous round. A major difference marking the new chronicles is that it is more informative and more accurate now that so many more data sources are available. Also it reads more expressive, more sophisticated. Thematically, unlike the previous chronicles that focused on the germination and initial development of humanities and social science in Shanghai, the new chronicles are primarily devoted to how Shanghai’s humanities and social science have developed and grown in response to the advancement of the Reform and Opening Up under the leadership of the CPC, and how, in the meanwhile, they have served the Reform and Opening Up, reflecting more on the combination and complementation of theory and practice. In this sense, the publication of Social Science Chronicles is an important landmark achievement of the development and prosperity of philosophy and social sciences in Shanghai.
