  • Tasting Shanghai While Sipping Coffee

On the evening of October 9, the fifth session of Jiangnan Culture Lecture (the second season) co-hosted by the Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations and the Shanghai Museum was held at the Shanghai Museum. Focusing on the theme of “Coffee Culture and Shanghai Images,” Professor Xu Jian, Deputy Dean of the Institute for Chinese Urban Governance of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and the famous author Chen Danyan (also a director of the Shanghai Writers’ Association), delivered speeches respectively titled “Coffee Culture and Shanghai Municipal Spirit” and “The Shanghai Trilogy and Shanghai in the Eyes of Chen Danyan.” Prof. Xu Jian pointed out that the number of coffee stores in Shanghai ranked first, far ahead of comparable cities wo...

  • Ancient ¡°Jiangnan Talents¡± and Jiangnan Humanities

On the afternoon of August 9, the serial Jiangnan Culture Lecture’s “Ancient ‘Jiangnan Talents’ and Jiangnan Humanities” was webcast live. The two lecturers were professor Luo Yuming from the Chinese Department of Fudan University, a PhD program supervisor, and professor Ling Lizhong, Director of the Calligraphy and Painting Research Department and Research Librarian of Shanghai Museum, also a PhD program supervisor from China Academy of Art. Prof. Luo Yuming noted that, during the middle and late Ming Dynasty, a group of scholars of nationwide influence emerged in Jiangnan (the south of the Yangtze River), where numerous cities arose and prospered and handicraft industry and commerce thrived. On the one hand, they followed the tradition that “a good ...

  • The city to enhance its soft power and elevate Shanghai character

Hard power makes a city powerful, while soft power makes a city great. A city that is remembered, respected, and much imagined can, in fact, not only fascinate with its peculiar spirit, character and style, but also generate lasting influence and driving forces. Such a city is usually of immense material magnitudes. In addition, it has discursive power, rule-making status, distinct cultural identity, open and inclusive environment, and the vitality, creativity and cohesion of its people. This is also a core area for the current era of global competition. Never stopping at economic development alone, Shanghai must shoulder the crucial mission of “acting as a trailbreaker for demonstration and guidance to make breakthroughs and overcome difficulties.” It should take the lead in ...

  • The elephants¡¯ odyssey tells their story of China

The recent news about 15 wandering wild Asian elephants moving northward in China’s Yunnan Province has received worldwide attention. The herd’s unusual trek through the province is fascinating, while it turns out to be a live coverage of China as well. The relationship between humans and elephants in China has been through many phases, from isolation and “mutual non-aggression,” to occasional conflicts, and to “seesaw confrontations” before arriving at today’s “dialogue and communication.” All along the way, the local governments and the inhabitants have most closely attended to these wild creatures on this long stroll to the north, adding a beautiful touch to the picture of “dialogue and communication” between people an...

  • Xiong Yuezhi: Openness and Inclusiveness of Jiangnan Culture

Historically, China’s social, economic and cultural center had long been the Central Plains. After the fall of the Jin Dynasty, there occurred a prolonged human migration from the war-stricken north towards the southern areas, a historical event known as “Yi Guan Nan Du” (“the large-scale migration of northern civilization and people to the South”), resulting in the confluence of the empire’s northern and southern cultures as well as the acceleration of the economic and cultural development of southern China. By the fall of the Song Dynasty, Jiangnan (literally South of the Yangtze River) had become the national economic and cultural center. The many historical floods of human migration have evidently demonstrated the openness and inclusiveness of Jiangn...
