
The
Shanghai Social Sciences
Association (SSSA) is a
non - governmental academic
institution aiming at promo-ting
and coordinating the researches
and popularization in the
field of social sciences
(including philosophy,
the hu-manities and social
sciences). Founded on March
9, 1958, SSSA is a united organization of social
science cir- cles in Shanghai.
Its successive presidents
were Mr. Chen Wangdao,
Mr. Xia Zhengnong
and
Mr. Luo Zhufeng.
Its present
president is Mr. Li Chuwen,
former consultant of the
Shanghai Municipal Government.
The major functions of SSSA are as follows:
Exerting its
efforts to link as a bridge between the vast number
of social scientific workers with the municipal gov-ernment,
reflecting the aspirations and demands of social
science circles, and defending
the legitimate rights
and in-terests of social scientific workers; coordinating
academic research activities and promoting international
academic exchanges; providing consulting service
for social sciences and promoting socialization of
research achievements of so-cial scientific theories;
popularizing social scientific knowledge and achievements
in scientific resem-ch; editing and publishing academic
books, periodicals and other ma-terials; commending
and giving awards to outstanding a.-chievements made
by societies and society workers in the field of
social sciences; being authorized to professionally
manage the academic organizations and non -governmental
research institutions of social sciences in Shanghai.
SSSA keeps in
close contact with the social scientific research units
of universities, research institutes, party colleges,
military colleges and the Municipal Government.SSSA~
approximately 100,000 members of all kinds of so-cieties
are its important human resources.
At present,
there are 161 societies accredited to SS-SA, including:academic
exchanges with foreign scholars. So far, SSSA and,
its affiliated societies have established fairly stable
re-lations in academic exchange with more than 20 universi-ties
or research institutes of the humanities or social
sci-ences in such countries and regions as the United
States,Japan, South Korea, Russia, Western Europe,
as well as China's Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The publications
of SSSA are "Academic Monthly","Exploration
and Free Views".SSSA
now owns 13,000 square meters of its Office Building,
Shanghai Social Sciences Itall and its Training
Center which provide fairly good facilities for the
develop-ment of academic exchange and research.
